The Northern Learning and Support Centre (NLSC) in Thompson was officially opened on March 25, 2009 with Lorraine Peters as the new Facilitator. A few congratulatory remarks were shared by the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Gerald Farthing via video conferencing from Winnipeg and Chief Andrew Colomb of the Marcel Colomb First Nation. The collaborative effort needed to establish the centre involved six partners and all were represented at the Opening Ceremonies. Included was staff from Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre (MFNERC), Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth (MECY), Frontier School Division, Mystery Lake School Division, the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, and Burntwood Regional Health Authority (Audiology). Many gifts have been shared by the partners for the Northern Learning and Support Centre and include a classroom provided by MFNERC in their new building in Thompson. MECY has provided a grant for the staff position as well as the purchase of distance technology equipment. Frontier School Division will provide ongoing technology support and furniture for the classroom. Mystery Lake School Division has assumed responsibility for the employment contract, professional development and support for the position of NLSC Facilitator. Family services support/information and regular on site audiology services will be provided by the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities and the Burntwood Regional Health Authority. The Northern Learning and Support Centre can provide support and opportunities for students, staff and parents to network and to access specialized professional development opportunities on-site or through distance technology and professional/specialist consultation. It is hoped that services in northern areas to students with exceptional needs, including students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be enhanced.
